Dan-O and Taro wandered into the train station, hands shoved into pockets and shoulders hunched against the icy wind that tore at their coats. They held their mobile devices over the gates and beeped their way through to walk up to the train platform. It would be several minutes before they could seek the welcoming refuge of the warm train interior, and thus they put themselves in front of a vending machine for a break against the howling wind.
“This is the coldest winter I can remember,” Taro said.
“My dad said it's going to get colder. Blizzardo broke out again. Or was broken out, he didn't really specify. I guess we're supposed to prepare for snow again.”
“Oh, like last year? We barely even got flurries.”
“Why don't you ask your girl Cosmette? You and that super-hottie on a first-name basis yet?”
“Well, we are exchanging Christmas and New Year's cards, but—”
“Whatever dude, how does Kari feel about that?”
Taro glanced at him, giving him just the barest of openings for—
“I guess instead of Kari versus Penny in my pool o' pudding, it's going to be Kari versus Cosmette! We'll have to tie both of Cosmette's hands behind her back to make it a fair fight, though.”
